We find film fascinating. We like discussing production, editing, story, storyboarding, acting, directing, cinematography, film scores, trivia, history, fan service, fan theories, subtexts, big ideas; if it is part of film we like to discuss it. For us film is no different than literature can be discussed just as deeply, or shallowly. We have been discussing movies for years and want to invite you, the listener to join us. I'm Max. And I'm Jason. Welcome to the conversation.

Max and Jason Watch a Movie: The Outlaw Josey Wales
Tuesday Jul 20, 2021
Tuesday Jul 20, 2021
Hoooo boy. On this week's episode we tackle the sometimes entertaining, often problematic western movie classic, The Outlaw Josey Wales.
What we did not when picked this, and we don't think any of the filmmakers knew when they made it was the following.
This curious movie was based on a book by a former member of the KKK, a man who wrote speeches for George McGovern, and was an ardent segregationist. The speeches and Klan activity he performed under the name Asa Carter. He called himself Forrest Carter, and took on the persona of a Cherokee when he penned his books about Josey Wales and later his false autobiography, The Education of Little Tree- a book that was selected to be featured in Oprah Winfrey's Book Club.
It is unclear how much Eastwood and his writers knew about this sad history, but for us the movie's origin in Forrest Carter's racist pseudo-history was never far from our mind. We spend a lot of time talking about the strange popularity of Lost Cause Narrative in American cinema as we wonder at this strange film.

Max and Jason Watch a Movie: Examining Richard Donner
Wednesday Jul 14, 2021
Wednesday Jul 14, 2021
Hey folks. This week we are doing something a bit different. As many of you may know, Richard Donner died this month and Jason and I wanted to discuss the many contributions Donner has made to film, as well as discuss what those contributions have meant to us over the years. I would be hard to overstate how much we adore Donner's work.
Anyway, if you have not, we hope this episode will encourage you to watch some of his movies. If you haven't seen a Donner film in a while, we also encourage you to watch another one. And let us know what your favorite Donner film is.
In addition to this podcast, I'd encourage folks to watch this conversation with Richard Donner and Christopher Nolan.

Max And Jason Watch a Movie: Conan the Barbarian
Friday Jul 02, 2021
Friday Jul 02, 2021
HUUUUGE apologies for the lateness of this episode. I can only plead "life happens," while pledging to try to do better in the future.
Apologies out of the way, today's episode is all barbarians all the time. That can only mean, Conan the Barbarian. I think Jason and I have a good discussion in store for you here. There are surprisingly deep ways to examine this "sword and sorcery" epic that go beyond the mere appreciation of actions beats, and the gouts of blood. Listen to our discussion then watch the film, or watch the film and then listen to our discussion. As ever spoilers abound.

Max and Jason Watch a Movie: "Enter the Dragon"
Wednesday Jun 02, 2021
Wednesday Jun 02, 2021
Folks sorry this one is a bit late. The holiday weekend and poor planning on my part conspired against me. But here it is. On this episode of M&JWAM, we take a pretty deep dive into Bruce Lee's groundbreaking 1973 masterpiece, Enter the Dragon. This one is a bit longer than usual but for the way the film shook up the industry as well as inspired generations to take up the martial arts it most certainly warrants an unapologetically thorough discussion. Enjoy and let us know why you think!
Enjoy.
