M&JW: Deliverance

Constant Listener! A bit of housekeeping. You will notice this episode has again dropped on a Monday. Moving forward, Mondays seem like they are going to be our best drop days. Any minisodes will drop on Saturdays, as in "Saturday Shorts." I like "clever" alliteration I guess. 

On to the show notes. This week our spooky cinema analysis is Deliverance, starring Burt Reynolds, John Voight, Ronny Cox and Ned Beatty. It was directed by John Boorman. It may seem like a counter-intuitive selection for the spooky season but have a listen and see if we can convince you that is a proper Halloween selection. Whether we achieve success on that front or not, it is hoped that we at least convince you that this strangely thoughtful, and undeniably controversial movie (then and now) from waaaaaaay back in 1972 is worthy of you consideration in any season. M&J offer a She-Hulk primer + A Short Review of Brendan Gleeson’s ”Calvary.”

This week it is just Max in Lord Movies Studios. He is, in honor of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, discussion one of his favorite topics, She-Hulk source material. This is a discussion of THE PRIMARY SHE-HULK DOCUMENTS, or as some people call them, comic books.  Max has been a studious She-Hulk fan for about 10 years, and in this episode he discusses many of the key literary moments in Jen Walters comic book iteration, especially those comic book runs he thinks will likely inform the new Disney + show.

After telling you everything you probably didn't know about Jennifer Walters, there is a short review of Calvary,  starring Brendan Gleeson, and Kelly Reilly. It is a serious film and Max has serious thoughts about it.

M&J Watch PREY

This week Max and Jason watched Prey, the latest installment in the Predator franchise (Predator-Verse?). There have been several sequels over the 35 years since Arnold first uttered his classic line, "If it bleeds, we can kill it." Many of the sequels have been guilty of being derivative (Predators), too tongue in cheek (think director Shane Black's outing), or simply terrible (both Aliens vs Predator films).

Revisiting ”Predator”

Audience! This week we are re-releasing our episode on Predator. Why you may ask? Because next week we are going to cover the latest installment of the Predatorverse, Prey. 

Before tackling Prey, I thought it might be useful to touch base with what started this whole franchise off. In this episode we discuss a lot of production notes, and we dive deep into why we think this is really one of the best Sci-Fi action films of the 80s. It isn't just for the set pieces. The acting actually matches the action in quality.

We talk about all this and more. So, lets get in the choppa and travel back to the 1980s and discuss Predator.

Nichelle Nichols died last week, so we decided to pause our Dirty Harry coverage and discuss her legacy and importance both to Star Trek and popular culture. Nichols left a legacy that extended beyond her role in one of the most important and ground breaking science fiction franchises in entertainment history. We wanted to share our appreciation of that legacy, and celebrate it with everyone else thinking about Nichelle Nichols right now.

Max and Jason Watch a ”Magnum Force.”

Finally, here is our review and analysis of Magnum Force. This is the second installment in the Dirty Harry Franchise. Does it live up to the promise of the first film? Or, rather like a lot of sequels of the time, was it better left unfilmed? Well, have a listen and find out what we think of Harry's battle with a gang of cops who have decided to try their hands at being a San Fransisco based death squad. 

Anya, who had to step away for a few shows, will be back in a special episode next week to fill us in on what she thought of this film and give us her closing thoughts on the first film Dirty Harry, and then she will be back to help us continue the analysis with The Enforcer.
